Fatal head-on collision claims two lives on Wit Road in Selection Park

A family of four was injured, including three people critically, after a head-on collision involving two SUVs on Wit Road near the N17 freeway.

Two men lost their lives, and four others were injured in a head-on collision involving two SUVs on Wit Road near the N17 in Selection Park.

According to City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi, the crash occurred at about 18:17 on August 2.

Ntladi said both adult male drivers sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene by paramedics. Three passengers were critically injured, while a minor escaped with minor injuries.

“The four injured passengers from the second SUV, believed to be a family, were treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi shared that the Selection Park Fire Station rescue team responded to the incident and found both drivers trapped behind the steering wheels of their vehicles.

Rescuers used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment, commonly known as the Jaws of Life, to gain access to the wrecks and free the trapped occupants before recovering the bodies of the deceased drivers.

“The entire road had to be temporarily closed for the duration of the rescue operations,” said Ntladi.

The incident was later handed over to the EMPD for further investigation. Officers also coordinated the removal of the deceased to a pathology facility and managed road rehabilitation due to an oil spill and debris from the collision.
