While this is the 11th instalment of the Halloween series, the 2018 film is a direct sequel to the original 1978 film of the same name.

This one takes place 40 years after Laurie’s first terrifying meeting with Michael Myers and centres around Laurie’s life-long preparation for the ultimate showdown with him.

Over the past 40 years she has honed her combative skills to ensure that she, and her family, is ready for him when he finally makes his comeback in Haddonfield.

Laurie is living in isolation in her heavily fortified house and has a strained relationship with her daughter, Karen, was forced to learn to shoot and defend herself from a very early age, creating paranoia born of her mother’s obsessions.

This paranoid upbringing does, however, stand Karen in good stead when Laurie’s chance to kill Michael comes on Halloween 2018.

Laurie takes her chance to put Michael in his grave when he escapes on October 29, 2018, while being moved from one sanatorium to another.

Naturally, he makes his way back to Haddonfield, stopping to kill a few people along the way in true Michael Myers fashion, for the final showdown.

While Laurie and Karen manage to trap Michael in the basement before setting the house on fire, in true slasher style, the viewer is left uncertain if Michael really is dead this time.

This latest offering flows seamlessly from the original but if you, like me, have seen all the episodes in-between you may be forgiven to being a little confused about what details were suggested in the original and what came later.

One of the pivotal misconceptions is that Michael was Laurie’s brother but Jamie Lee Curtis reminded moviegoers at the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 that Michael and Laurie Strobb are not connected at all and this is probably the most important thing to remember as you embark on the newest offering.

“There is nothing more than something random,” says Curtis.

“You see random acts of violence is what terrorism really is.

“She (Laurie) was the ultimate soft target, it was a random attack and for some reason he chose her and that is the unexplainable, terrifying reality of her life and why that movie (the original) resonated so deeply with people,” she says.

That said, this instalment is not quite as terrifying as I was expecting it to be.

While the movie is quite enjoyable, it isn’t nearly as frightening as the original and takes some time to get to the meat of the story. It is, however, well worth a watch for both Halloween and slasher movie fans.
