Prepare for heavy congestion on the N3, if you’re planning a trip to the coast

Traffic volumes on the N3 could quickly increase to over 2,000 vehicles per hour during peak periods.

As holiday-makers make their way down to KwaZulu-Natal for the festive season, the N3 Toll Concession has warned motorists to plan for heavy traffic conditions on the N3 Toll Route from Wednesday to Friday this week.

The N3 Toll Concession’s operations manager, Thania Dhoogra, said traffic volumes on the N3 could quickly increase to over 2,000 vehicles per hour during peak periods, which could lead to congestion and possible delays.

Dhoogra urged motorists to plan their routes prior to departing on their holiday trips, and to stay informed of road and traffic conditions.

“Careful planning helps to avoid a last minute rush, taking unnecessary risks, and late-night driving.

“As a further safety measure, N3 Toll Concession recommends that road users rather travel during the day than at night. Although there are marginally fewer crashes at night, these crashes tend to be far more severe,” said Dhoogra in a statement.

N3 Toll Concession said during the festive period it would continue to collate, analyse and interpret all data on traffic conditions.

The information is used to forecast and manage traffic flow, and to provide real-time guidance and road safety support to both road users and stakeholders of the N3 Toll Concession.

To stay informed of the prevailing road and traffic conditions, motorists were encouraged to follow the N3 Toll Concession on Twitter @N3Route or call the N3 helpline, day or night, on 0800 63 43 57.

“Our route services team is always ready to assist in any emergency on the N3 Toll Route or to provide you with the latest, verified route and traffic information,” said Dhoogra.
