Midvaal unveils R49 million substation to expand electricity capacity
The R49 million investment is set to boost Savanna City’s electricity capacity and pave the way for further growth.
SAVANNA CITY – The Midvaal Local Municipality has unveiled the newly completed Savanna City Substation, a R49 million project aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving distribution in the area.
The municipality said the project was completed on time and within budget as part of its ongoing investment in electricity infrastructure to meet growing demand and support further development.
Construction included the substation terrace and earthmat, plinths and foundations, as well as an 88 kV control room with ventilation and warning signage. The project also included 11 kV switching rooms, a control room and a load control room.

An oil holding dam was constructed for the 88/11 kV transformers, while yard stone was spread across the substation yard in line with required specifications. The electrical infrastructure was developed according to Eskom standards and specifications.
According to the municipality, the project created at least 25 jobs during construction. Ten Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were also subcontracted to participate in the project.
Midvaal said the Savanna City Substation will increase electricity capacity to meet rising demand and form part of efforts to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with development in the area.
The municipality said continued investment in infrastructure is intended to support reliable and sustainable electricity services and unlock further development.
The project was announced on behalf of the Office of the Executive Mayor, Alderman Peter Teixeira.
