A crash around the bend
A collision left two people trapped in a wrecked vehicle. They had serious injuries.
A large crowd of people, many residents from nearby homes, gathered around the wrecked Polo as emergency personnel tried to safely remove the driver. A few meters away paramedics treated several passengers from the minibus for minor injuries and lacerations.
The accident occurred on the rainy, Sunday night on February 2 at about 20:30. The roads were wet form the weekend of rain, when the two vehicles collided in Hans Strydom Street in the Klipfontein area.
The head-on collision occurred between the Opel Corsa and the minibus on the bend in Hans Strydom Street, near the Steve Bantu Biko crossing. According to official reports, one of the vehicles lost control for unknown reasons and collided with the other.
Both the passenger and the driver of the Corsa were trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed from the vehicle by emergency workers. The flashing lights and the sound of the crash on the otherwise quite Hans Strydom Street, attracted a crowd as they watched emergency services get to work. It took them about 30 minutes to free both occupants.
The recent rains has caused a general increase in accidents recently. Other serious accidents occurred as well. Three cars were involved in an accident in Mandela Street. According to the driver who was not injured, one of the vehicles drove into the other from behind who in turn drove into him. The other two drivers were taken to hospital. This accident occurred on Thursday January 27. The police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
On Friday morning January 28, a bakkie overturned in Watermeyer Street where it runs passed Highland Mews. A large crowd also gathered here as people were making their way to work. They watched as Emergency Services took the driver to hospital.
