All he wanted was to get home safe but unfortunately he met three men that had a different plan to his.
On Saturday, July 2 Mr Bheki Galela was at Walter Sisulu Street in the Central Business District (CBD) asking for a lift to Ogies when he got robbed.
Around 19:00 a silver and white double-cab bakkie stopped next to him with the driver instructing the man to quickly get inside as the area is not eligible for cars to randomly stop there.
Scared the driver will get a traffic fine the 48-year-old got in as fast as he could. It seemed like it was his lucky day as when he told the occupants he was going to Ogies, they said they were too.
Just after the S-bends on the N12 highway the man seated with Galela requested him to hand over his cell phone and money but he refused.
“They told me their job is to take cell phones and money from people, not operate as a cab,” continued Galela.
After he refused the suspect in front took out a firearm and allegedly pointed it at him. Seeing the firearm Galela immediately handed over his cell phone and didn’t put up a fight as he was searched for money.
“All of this happened as we were traveling at a road where I could only see mielie fields. The car was stopped, hazards were switched on and I was told to exit the vehicle,” said Galela.
But luckily he managed to see the number plate of the vehicle, its model and colour. He opened a case of armed robbery at the police station as soon as he could.
And before the rooster crowed two of the three suspects were behind bars but the suspect that has Galela’s belongings is still on the run.
