Car hijacking spree terrorises the eMalahleni community

Three brazen hijackings have been recorded, with victims describing horrifying disputes with armed suspects.

A chilling wave of car hijackings has struck fear into the hearts of eMalahleni residents, leaving a trail of shaken victims and sparking a massive police investigation.

In a shocking series of events, three brazen hijackings have been reported, with victims describing harrowing encounters with armed suspects.

According to reports, on Tuesday, July 2 at 22:00, a victim was ambushed by four masked men carrying firearms, who allegedly forced him into their car and drove to a secluded area, withdrawing cash from his account using his phone. The suspects also stole the victim’s personal belongings, including his ID and credit cards.

The next day, on Wednesday, July 3 at 20:30, it is alleged that a second victim was hijacked in the yard on French Street by four suspects in a Toyota Hilux bakkie, who pushed him into the back seat and withdrew cash from his account using his bank cards before abandoning him in downtown.

In a third incident on the same day, a victim was approached by two masked men while using an ATM on Mandela Drive.

The two suspects allegedly demanded R2 000 but fled with the victim’s vehicle when he did not have the money in his account.

Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police gave these tips: “Avoid being alone in a vehicle when traveling at night. Do not stop around hijacking spots or in any secluded area. Always be alert when driving. If you suspect that you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the SAPS Emergency Number 10111. Avoid distractions such as being on your phone, or drinking and driving. Increase caution at intersections; always keep a lookout for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.”
