Man loses hard-earned cash in robbery

eMalahleni hit by armed robbery spree

Armed suspects brought terror to eMalahleni’s streets last Saturday, targeting an unsuspecting resident.

According to the police reports, a man alleged that on Saturday, November 2, at around 10:45, he was ambushed while at his gate.

The man claimed that he went to the bank to withdraw cash for the house project he was working on. After withdrawing the money, he headed home.

When he received a call from a friend, he parked next to the gate so he could speak to him.

Things took a sudden turn when three armed robbers in a Ford Fiesta surrounded his vehicle.

It is believed they followed him from the bank.

“They knocked on the side of my window and asked me to open the door. The men who were holding firearms started searching me and found I had money. They then took it. My biggest fear was that they were going to hurt my family, who were in the car with me,” said the man.

The suspects fled with the man’s cellphone, cash, and car keys.

“People should be alert when withdrawing a large amount of money, as these criminals are always on the lookout. It seems the men were following me the whole time because how did they know I had money on me? I think the best way is to send the money through an account number rather than risk being a suspect in such incidents,” said the man.

Captain Eddie Hall from the Witbank police gave these tips, “Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night. Do not stop around hijacking spots or in any secluded area.

Always be alert when driving. If you suspect you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the SAPS Emergency Number, 10111.

Avoid distractions, such as being on your phone or drinking. Increase caution at intersections; always watch for people loitering around your car or any sudden activity around your car.”

This is an on-going case, and the police are still investigating.
