Mines reap revenue, communities pay for their health, and more
These are the effects that come with the mine activities respiratory problems, structural damage to homes, and environmental degradation.
Known as the City of Coal, eMalahleni is home to numerous mines that have been extracting coal for decades.
While some of these mines generate significant revenue, the surrounding communities are paying the price with their health, livelihoods, and quality of life.
Residents of Phola are among those feeling the wrath of mining activities.
Oupa Mlaba, a resident, said: “There’s a mine in our area causing havoc in our daily lives. Our homes are damaged, the homes are cracking, windows also getting broken, and the mining activities are affecting livestock on a nearby farm. We’re not receiving any help from the mine; they just blast.”
WITBANK NEWS has been receiving similar complaints in Vosman and Klarinet. Residents in these areas report respiratory problems, structural damage to homes, and environmental degradation. Despite their concerns, the mines continue to operate with impunity.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has been sent inquiries, but no response has been received.
As the struggle for justice and compensation continues, one question remains: What will it take for the mines to prioritise people’s health and well-being over profits?
