‘Lettuce’ grow and ‘beet’ the high cost of living, says Emalahleni councillor
The councillor’s aim is to encourage families to grow fresh vegetables and reduce their expenses.
Ward 17 Clr Sizwe Mathebula handed over seeds to Kamgewane families to support household food gardening and sustainability.
On January 16, the councillor gathered residents at a community garden in the area and distributed seeds to encourage families to grow fresh vegetables, reduce food costs, and promote healthy living.
“We always donate seeds varying with seasons, especially in this area, because it is a good farming area,” Sizwe said.
The seeds, sourced from the Department of Agriculture, included onion, beetroot, carrot, and spinach, which are suitable for the current season.
A total of 30 households benefited from the initiative, which aimed to boost local food security.

Andries Gumede, one of the residents who received seeds, expressed gratitude to the councillor for giving them exactly what they needed.
“The councillor gave us what we really needed because we needed assistance with seeds and with ploughing,” Andries said.
He added that the crops that will come from planting the seeds would also help minimise their costs because they would be able to get some vegetables from their gardens instead of always going to the stores to buy.
“Not only are we going to be able to live on the crops that we will grow, but our gardens will also help prevent snakes from entering our yards,” the experienced farmer said.
