eMalahleni residents warned of water discolouration

The municipality clarified that the water has not been confirmed unsafe to drink.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has released a statement informing residents from the City of Coal about a temporary decline in water quality, specifically affecting its colour and turbidity.

The municipality confirmed that the issue stems from the malfunctioning filtration backwash valves and actuators, which caused a disturbance in the backwash system.

While the change in appearance may be alarming to residents, the municipality clarified that there is currently no evidence to suggest that the water is unsafe to drink.

“At this stage, the water has not been confirmed to be unsafe for consumption,” they stated.

According to the communications department, the municipality is actively working to stabilise the system and restore normal operations as soon as possible.

Ongoing laboratory testing and water quality analysis are currently underway to ensure the water meets safety standards.

Residents are advised that they may continue to see temporary discolouration until the system is fully stabilised.
