Mathew Phosa and Price streets cry out for TLC

According to motorists, the condition of the two streets is also causing traffic congestion in the area.

Residents are demanding urgent attention to two main roads that have become hard to drive on: Mathew Phosa Street in KwaGuqa Extension and Price Street in the eMalahleni industrial area.

Mathew Phosa Street, a vital artery for Kwa-Guqa Extensions, is riddled with deep potholes and remains uneven.

According to residents, the road forces motorists to slow down drastically, causing congestion and safety risks.

Resident Muzi Shawe expressed his frustration, stating that the short-term solution the municipality has been applying is unacceptable.

“The damaged road has caused traffic congestion as vehicles must slow down significantly to navigate the potholes. The repairs done by municipal contractors are substandard, quickly crumbling and cracking, sometimes within hours of rain. This is completely unacceptable and falls far below the standard expected of public service delivery,” Shawe said.

Shawe criticised the municipality’s repeated awarding of tenders to the same contractor despite poor workmanship. He stressed that proper monitoring and accountability are urgently needed to ensure public funds are not wasted.

Meanwhile, Price Street in the industrial hub also needs rehabilitation. Motorists describe driving there as ‘a hard pill to swallow’.

“In eMalahleni, you just have to choose which pothole to drive over; there’s no way you can escape the city’s potholes. When you miss one pothole, you mistakenly hit another one. That’s now our routine as motorists,” another resident said.

Residents argue that both streets urgently need TLC, not quick patchwork fixes, but durable rehabilitation that restores safety.
