Armed hijackers target delivery riders

The latest incidents were reported shortly after a spike in motorbike hijackings in eMalahleni.

Delivery motorbike drivers in eMalahleni continue to be targeted, with two separate hijackings taking place on consecutive nights.

The two incidents occurred on June 1 and 2, where both drivers were targetted just outside clients’ homes in the eMalahleni CBD.

On the night of June 1, a delivery driver was ambushed before he could hand over his delivery. According to him, a vehicle blocked his path, and two armed men confronted him. The duo allegedly pointed a gun at him, searched him, and fled with his cellphone and motorbike.

The following night, another delivery driver was targeted moments after completing a delivery. He reported that two armed men approached him and threatened him. They then robbed him and made off with his cellphone, wallet, and motorbike.

These back-to-back incidents raise serious concerns as the City of Coal suffered several motorbike hijackings in April.

“Be alert when approaching gates or driveways. Avoid routines that may be easily monitored by criminals.

Report suspicious vehicles or people immediately. Ensure gates and surroundings are well-lit where possible, and never resist armed suspects during a robbery,” the police advised.
