Over 1000 arrested during Operation Shanela II in Mpumalanga

Major General Mkhwanazi reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to intensifying operations to ensure safer communities and bring perpetrators of crime to justice.

SAPS, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, has executed over 14 000 actions and arrested more than 1000 suspects across Mpumalanga for various offences ranging from drunken driving to serious charges such as murder.


Operating under Operation Shanela II, from June 11 to 14, the stakeholders conducted search operations, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, high-visibility patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, compliance inspections, and targeted interventions at businesses, farms, mines, and liquor premises.


The operation led to the arrest of more than 1000 suspects facing severe charges, including murder, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

They also arrested individuals with charges of illegal migration, drug-related crimes, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, illicit mining, human trafficking, and other serious offences.

The operation also led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, dangerous weapons, drugs, liquor, contraband goods worth millions of rand, counterfeit goods, precious metals, vehicles, and other related exhibits.


The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended all members and stakeholders for their dedication and reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to intensifying operations to ensure safer communities and bring perpetrators of crime to justice.
