eMalahleni water shutdown progresses as repairs advance

The planned water outage is scheduled to last seven days while maintenance continues.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has confirmed steady progress in its scheduled week-long water system shutdown.

The shutdown began on June 29 and is set to continue until July 5. The planned outage aimed at facilitating essential maintenance on the main command reservoir, dam, and water treatment plant is now entering its third day.

According to the municipality’s latest public statement issued on June 30, contractors remain on track with the planned works. The Point D Command Reservoir has reached 80% completion, with valves and pipes replaced as scheduled. Meanwhile, the Water Treatment Plant is 40% complete, with materials delivered and repair work underway.

The municipality has highlighted four main areas of concentration during the shutdown, which include the Point D Command Reservoir, Water Treatment Plant, Point C, and the dam. For safety reasons, access to these work sites has been restricted, and residents are urged not to visit or attempt entry while maintenance is in progress.

Residents have been reminded that the system takes time to drain, particularly in low-lying areas, and that limited production from package plants continues to supply some regions. The municipality emphasised that the shutdown is progressing as planned.

While temporary disruptions are expected, officials have reiterated that these repairs are crucial to ensuring long-term water stability across the municipality.
