Mpumi Mtshweni reflects on her road to Spirit of Praise
The gospel artist said she started singing in Sunday school and grew in her gift until she secured her spot in the Spirit of Praise group.
Emalahleni’s own gospel powerhouse, Mpumi Mtshweni, is gearing up to grace a local town with unforgettable performances alongside her Spirit of Praise family.
Born and bred in the City of Coal, the 35-year-old’s talent was nurtured just in front of everyone’s eyes as she started singing at just four years of age at New Life Missionary Church.
“Everything started at church, where I served. My mom was very strict, especially when it came to church,” Mpumi said.
She added that with the help of Philani Buthelezi, who recognised and nurtured her gift at Sunday school, she started taking her gift seriously.
“Philani held my hand until I was 14. He was so passionate in nurturing my gift, teaching me songs, and making sure that I sing,” she said.
As she grew older, Mpumi said she joined the Extravaganza group and then later moved to the respectable stages of Heart of Worship.
Among the countless achievements the artist has accomplished in her career so far, she noted that her biggest break came when she eventually joined the renowned Spirit of Praise group after overcoming several challenges.
“Being part of Spirit of Praise is the biggest thing that has ever happened in my life, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity that was created especially for me,” Mpumi said.
“There was a time when I went for auditions, and it wasn’t rejection necessarily, but it wasn’t time, because the bible says when the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen.”
The powerhouse said she is currently planning the recording “Mpumi Mtshweni and sisters,” taking place at Carnival City on August 29, and has been seeking ways to transform lives through various projects.
“My plan is to make sure that I recognise the talent in Mpumalanga and nurture it. I pray to find people that will serve God faithfully, not people who are seeking fame,” she said.
On May 16, Mpumi will be joining the gospel powerhouse Spirit of Praise All Stars, who will be performing in Middelburg with promises of an unforgettable night filled with powerful praise, worship, and musical excellence.
The artist attributes her success to all her mentors and supporters who continue to guide and hold her hand in her journey.
To aspiring artists, she recommends chasing purpose over fame.
“Being a singer is not enough, but being a singer with the Holy Spirit is more than enough; the Holy Spirit must lead you,” she said.
