eMalahleni hijackers still target motorbikes–Authorities call for extra vigilance

Authorities are calling on motorbike drivers to take precautionary steps to protect themselves and their bikes.

Witbank SAPS is urging motorbike drivers to remain vigilant when delivering packages around the city, especially at night.

This comes after two motorbikes were hijacked at gunpoint in separate incidents.

In the first incident that occurred on March 29, a man told the police that around 19:15, a delivery was made at a complex in Emalahleni Extension 10.

As the recipient was about to tip him, he noticed armed men behind him, and he ran off.

As the man looked behind him, he reported that he was pointed with a firearm at his head and forced to lie down. The duo made off with his motorbike, and he was left on the ground.

In the second incident that occurred on April 7 in Die Heuwel, a man told the police that he was making a delivery outside a certain house when a sedan stopped in front of him and blocked his way.

The man further told the police that three armed men got out of the car and pointed a firearm at him.

The man was robbed of his cash; however, he ran off afterwards, leaving his motorbike behind.

The motorbike remains at large.

Witbank SAPS is investigating two cases of carjacking following the two incidents.

The Witbank SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ratau, has urged motorbike drivers to be extra observant to avoid falling victim to such incidents.

“Another thing that we have noticed is that some motorbike drivers don’t obey road rules, especially when it comes to where they drive. They usually drive on the pedestrians’ way, where their safety is compromised. So, we’re calling on them to obey rules,” Ratau said.
