Duo to face court after ammunition bust along the N12

The duo was arrested during a routine patrol led by the Middelburg Flying Squad.

Two men, aged 36 and 39, are expected to appear in court soon after being arrested for the unlawful possession of ammunition during a routine patrol operation in the Ogies policing area.

The men were arrested on June 18.

According to the police, members of the Middelburg Flying Squad were conducting crime prevention patrols along the N12 highway at around 20:00 when they stopped a black BMW 1 Series with Gauteng registration plates.

The vehicle was occupied by two men, one believed to be a South African national and the other a Mozambican national.

During the search, officers discovered a plastic bag hidden inside a first-aid kit in the car’s boot. The bag contained 150 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

According to the police, the suspects failed to provide documentation or a satisfactory explanation for possessing the ammunition, leading to their immediate arrest.

Police confiscated 150 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and cellphones.

The suspects have been charged with unlawful possession of ammunition and will soon appear before court in connection with the charges.

Police confirmed that the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal circulation of firearms and ammunition in the province.
