Lying under oath leads straight to jail, warns Vosman Police

The warning comes after a 21-year-old woman was arrested for fabricating a rape case.

Vosman SAPS warns the community of eMalahleni about the consequences of lying under oath, following the arrest of a woman who reportedly admitted to fabricating a rape case.

The matter unfolded after the 21-year-old from Phase 4 in Hlalanikahle opened a case, claiming that she had been raped on the evening of May 26.

According to the police, in her initial statement, the woman had alleged that a man forced her to his home in Kwa-Guqa, where he locked her in and raped her.

Lieutenant Colonel Vusi Mnisi from Vosman SAPS said the police launched an investigation into the matter. However, things took a different turn on June 12 when the investigating officer went to re-interview the victim.

“That is when it was discovered that the complainant contradicted herself. Her statement was not connecting so well with the previous one she made on the rape case,” Mnisi said. “Furthermore, she admitted that she had lied about being raped.”

That was when the officer immediately shifted gears from providing victim support to enforcing the law. The woman was arrested on the spot for perjury.

On June 15, she made her first appearance at the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court, where she was released on bail, and her case was postponed to July 7.

Police warn the community to always remember that opening a case means taking an oath to tell nothing but the truth.

“If investigations later reveal that you didn’t tell the truth, you will get arrested,” Mnisi said. “We warn the public to never come to the station and open cases under false pretence because, in the long run, it ends up being difficult for those wrongfully accused to get employment due to the criminal record.”
