Carjacking wave hits Vosman policing area
Police are calling for motorists to exercise vigilance when driving in and out of the City of Coal.
The Vosman policing area has been hit by another string of violent carjackings, with suspects repeatedly holding victims at gunpoint and escape with vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of rand.
According to the police, on June 23 in Lynville, a food delivery driver was approached by two men. They allegedly pointed a firearm at him and fled with his cellphone and a Big Boy motorbike.
Two days later, on June 25, at Hlalanikahle Extension 03, police reported that a man parked outside a house was ambushed by two armed men. He was forced to the ground, and his Toyota GD-6 double cab, along with two cellphones, was taken.
Later that evening, at Kwa-Guqa Extension 11, police reported that a man driving a Quantum was attacked. According to the police, two men forced him and his colleague into the back seat at gunpoint, drove them into nearby bushes, and later abandoned them at Highveld Steel. The suspects stole both victims’ cellphones and the vehicle.
On June 27, at Kwa-Guqa Extension 11, police confirmed that a man was ordered at gunpoint to drive his Toyota Fortuner until reaching a secluded spot. He was then forced out of the driver’s seat, and the suspects drove away with the vehicle.
In the early hours of June 27 at Clewer, police reported that a man driving his Ford EcoSport was boxed in by a bakkie and a Polo. Four armed men demanded his keys and wallet before escaping with the vehicle.
The Vosman SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Vusi Mnisi, urged residents in areas such as Lynnville, Hlalanikahle, Kwa-Guqa Extensions, and Clewer to remain vigilant, avoid stopping in isolated areas, and report suspicious activity immediately.

Mnisi had previously called on motorists to avoid meeting in their cars late at night, noting that this is when hijackers target them most.
“Motorists should also remember that hijackers also target them when they’re stopped at their gates or when they’re opening them,” Mnisi said.
