Panorama’s head girl shines on the field and in the classroom

Michelle Khoza is redefining what it means to be a student leader, excelling in sports while maintaining a strong academic performance.

Laerskool Panorama’s head girl, Michelle Khoza, is redefining what it means to be a student leader, excelling in her academics while also thriving on the hockey field.

Since joining the sport for the first time last year, the 13-year-old Grade 7 learner has made it to the regional U13 Falcon team, but her greatest achievement came when she was selected to participate in the Mpumalanga trials.

“It’s the best thing for her because the fact that she was seen and selected alone gives confirmation that the road ahead is bright,” said her mother, Maundy Mbatsane.

The rising hockey star is currently preparing for her regional hockey tournament, which will take place from July 7 to 11 in Middelburg.

Apart from her promising future in the sport, Michelle’s parents said her academics have not suffered. She has made it to the top ten in her class every term.

The young leader is also passionate about netball, which she has been playing since Grade 1. She only joined hockey after years of trying to convince her parents that she could manage to do both and still not fall behind in her academics.

“I always thought she must only do one sport so she could also focus on her academics. I was shocked when she tried out for the school team and made it, and also got selected to be one of those going to the Mpumalanga trials,” her mom said.

Inspired by her cousin, Adel Mabuza, who has been playing for Mpumalanga in both netball and hockey, Michelle said she believes she is also on the right path.

During her spare time, Michelle likes to act and do short dramas for TikTok, something for which she is well known by her peers.

“We are so proud of what our daughter has accomplished so far, and we look forward to supporting her throughout her journey,” said her father, Zweli Khoza.
