Vus’ Unembeza Tournament strengthens fight against substance abuse

The fourth annual Vus’ Unembeza Soccer Tournament promoted substance abuse awareness while supporting recovery through sport.

The Kakarambha Foundation hosted the fourth annual Vus’ Unembeza Soccer Tournament at Lynnville Stadium, continuing its mission of using sport as a tool to combat substance abuse, raise awareness and support individuals on the path to recovery.

Held on July 2, the tournament brought together recovering addicts, community members, local leaders and organisations committed to tackling substance abuse.

This year’s event also included children, who participated in football activities and awareness programmes during the school holidays aimed at keeping them off the streets and preventing early exposure to drugs and alcohol.

Foundation founder Thando Masango said the tournament is about healing, awareness and prevention.

“We want to support those struggling with addiction while also guiding young people towards positive choices, especially during the school holidays when they are most vulnerable,” he said.

On the field, Ama London successfully defended their title, winning the tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
Ward Councillor Sizwe Buthelezi praised the initiative and emphasised its deeper purpose beyond sport.

“Ama London has once again claimed victory on the field, but the real focus of this tournament is not football. The real winners are those who will be given an opportunity to go to rehab. Some participants identified through the programme will be selected and supported to access rehabilitation services. That is the true aim is to give people a chance to rebuild their lives.”

Teams and community members gathered at Lynnville Stadium for the fourth annual Vus’ Unembeza Soccer Tournament, which promotes substance abuse awareness, recovery and positive community engagement.

Masango added that the event continues to grow because of strong community involvement.

“We are not only hosting a tournament; we are creating a platform for change every year. We are truly grateful to everyone who came out and supported the cause.”
