Making waves for a good cause
Power boating racing stirred the waters at Barham Bay over the weekend as two boat racing associations teamed up to raise money for local cancer patients. It was a day of fun in the sun on May 24.
The day started with the junior class, with eight boats on the starting line that made for some exciting racing. Local racer Geraldine Whiteman took the lead in the first heat but lost it on the second last lap to Leanne Tope who took all the heats with Geraldine in second and Nico Hendrico taking third.
The F30 class was won by Christiaan Wilemse and in second place was Zandelee Brouwer with Zuane Brouwer in third place
The day moved on with the 90 horse power sprint racing with Willie Groenestein and Eddie Dalglish making it to the final. It was a huge battle between the two racers but in the end Eddie made a daring move in the top corner and took first place with Willie following in second and Lionel Duncan in third
Some of the local girls took to the water on jet skies for a fun filled sprint race. They had a ball on the water. Bonita Terblanch took first place. The boys had an exciting sprint on the jet skies as well with Hein in first.
It was time for the big guns, luck of the draw put Ivan Terblanche in poll position and John-Ross Duncan behind him and Nico Wessels in third position. Ivan had to pull out all his tricks to hold off John-Ross who was low flying but at every corner Ivan slammed the door shut. The final ended with two boats flying over the finish line neck on neck. Ivan just made it across first with Johan-Ross in second and Nico in third.
There was also a drag race between a hard bottom, an F1 and a jet ski that was of coarse won by the F1 piloted by Andre Kemp. The last event of the day was the top end run witch was won by John-Ross with a speed of 155km/h
“We would like to thank all our sponsors that helped us make the day a success and to the rubber ducks for supporting our race,” said John-Ross Duncan.
