Fuel price hike hits motorists ahead of festive season
South Africans face pricier road travel as fuel costs jump across the board, with steep increases for diesel, paraffin and LP gas.
South African motorists must tighten their belts this festive season as the cost of road travel just went up.
This after an increase to all fuels across the board took effect this morning (Wednesday).

The Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum (DMRP) announced the increases on Tuesday, citing various reasons for the adjustment, both nationally and internationally.
While petrol rose by 29c per litre, diesel users are harder hit, with a 65c/litre increase to 0.05% sulphur and a whopping 82c/litre increase for 0.005% sulphur.
The country’s poorest residents are also hard hit, with the price of illuminating paraffin rising by 74c/litre.
Increases at the pumps
- Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): 29.00 c/l increase
- Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): 29.00 c/l increase
- Diesel (0.05% sulphur): 65.48 c/l increase
- Diesel (0.005% sulphur): 82.48 c/l increase
Other fuel increases
- Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 74.48 c/l increase
- SMNRP for IP: 99.00 c/l increase
- Maximum LP Gas retail price: 24.00 c/kg increase (9.00 c/kg increase in the Western Cape)
