Groutville protestors released

No criminal charges were laid against Dube Village rioters

THE 27 rioters from Dube Village in Groutville arrested last Tuesday, have been released.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu has welcomed this, but warned the accused of possible sentences if they continue to transgress the law.

‘We call for a no-nonsense approach to illegal protests.

‘I would like to welcome the release of these youngsters.

‘It is saddening that this group failed to bring their concerns to our attention.

‘I hold a view that these are youngsters who deserve a chance to make positive change in society,’ said Mthembu.

The men and women were arrested following an illegal protest believed to be linked to a copycat housing remonstration with law enforcement officers.

The protesters were acquitted after spending one night at the KwaDukuza police cells.

They appeared at the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The youngsters were released following a stern warning by the Senior Public Prosecutor, vowing to act decisively against repeat offenders.

‘If they dare do so, harsh sentences will be meted out against them,’ said Senior Prosecutor, M Moodley.

Mayor Mthembu has commended the swift arrests by the police.

‘I commend the work of the Police for restoring peace at Groutville; such behaviour is unacceptable as it amounts to senseless instability in our communities, it must be clear that we as government are not here to oppress our people,’ he said.

Mthembu has also called for calm and restrain following their discharge.

Mthembu said he would be engaging with the affected community this week in a bid to clarify matters relating to the delivery of services.

No criminal charges were laid against the accused.
