AN incident-free start to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations was reported today (Monday) as over 700 000 candidates sat for their English paper.
According to KZN Department of Education (DoE) spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi, all districts reported a smooth start despite the wet weather conditions.
DoE uThungulu District Director David Chonco extended his well wishes to learners at the start of the examinations.
‘Be proud that you have come this far.
‘It has been a 12 year journey. Complete it with success, keep calm and remain focused. Take every day and use it for maximum study.
‘Put an end to your social networking. You will have sufficient time for facebook, bbm and watsapp after the exams are over.
‘To the educators, department officials, parents and organised labour, a big thank you for your hard work, dedication and support,’ he said.
This year 707 136 candidates will sit for exams across more than 6 699 examination centres, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi) said.
These examinations will be overseen by 65 000 invigilators and will be marked by over 35 000 markers in 118 marking centres across the country.
Results will be announced on 7 January and all pupils are urged to be at their schools on this day to collect their results.
In her message to the class of 2013 earlier this month, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said these exams are the culmination of years of schooling and are crucial in ensuring that matriculants are able to establish a platform from which they can launch themselves into their desired future.
‘Remember, your future is in your hands. Only you can make the choices that will determine your future,’ she said.
