Court connects abused kids to carers

Arboretum Primary pupils pack presents for abused children

FOR the fourth consecutive year, privileged pupils at Arboretum Primary have rallied together to bless the lives of unfortunate children their own age.

Under the co-ordination of Departmental Head, Liesl Hastings, the pupils took part in the school’s ‘Ubuntu Project’, collecting items needed by rape and physical abuse victims.

Painstakingly and colourfully wrapped, and accompanied by personal messages of encouragement, photos, prayers and scripture verses, no fewer than 66 boxes were filled.

‘We asked for two boxes from each class, carefully gift-wrapped for boys and girls of their own age, so they can identify with them,’ said Hastings.

‘The items are very practical, like toothpaste and soap. For many of the children who get them, this will be the first time they ever receive a present.’

The National Prosecuting Authority staff at the Richards Bay court are the bridge linking the pupils with the recipients, most of whom are linked to abuse cases heard in court.

‘We also visit child victims in hospitals and what a joy it is to see their reaction when they receive the presents; it is very emotional,’ said Richards Bay Court Preparation Officer, Mandisa Sikakane.

‘We also hand out bravery certificates to those young ones who had the courage to testify in our special courts.

‘They may never meet these wonderful Arboretum Primary pupils, but they will never forget these acts of kindness.’
