Jabulani Rehab centre is a sinking ship

Residents at rehabilitation centre may soon find themselves homeless if the centre doesn’t receive financial help.

THERE seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for the residents of Jabulani Rehabilitation Centre.

The centre, which is situated off the R34 towards Nkwalini, is home to 23 disabled and homeless men and women, and is facing enormous financial challenges.

APC, the organisation in charge of the centre, is struggling to keep the centre operating owing to lack of funds, and its management has decided to sell the centre.

The centre is in a desperate state of disrepair and the inhabitants said at night, the whole area is like dark city.

The workshop where the residents make their crafts needs a revamp, new lighting and more equipment.

Their sleeping quarters are old, with the paint peeling off the walls.

The main gate is not working properly, leaving the inhabitants at the mercy of criminals.

‘There has already been a few break-ins in the past, and we are afraid for our lives and, as you can see for yourself, we can’t even defend ourselves,’ said an anxiousThuleleni Ntshangase.

There is talk of moving the centre to Dumisani Makhaye Village (uMhlathuze Village), but for these destitute people to move, accommodation must be provided for them there as well.

Your donation can go a long way

Assistant CWP facilitator at the centre Mandla Gumede said for the centre’s revival, they needed donations of material for the inhabitants to make their crafts and wares and animal skins to make amabheshu and shields, old appliances to sell for recycling, and seeds or seedlings to plant in their vegetable garden to sell, the proceeds of which go towards sustaining the centre.

Also needed are wheelchairs, blankets, second-hand clothing for men and women and donations of food.
