Lights out on highway…again

Cable thieves strike again, causing traffic danger

FOR the umpteenth time, cable thieves have created a dangerous situation on the John Ross Parkway by disconnecting traffic lights.

The signals at the East Central Arterial intersection have been out of commission for more than a week after the concrete blocks supporting the robot poles were smashed to get at the cables.

‘For the sake of probably R100 worth of cable, motorists have been placed at extreme risk at this busy, high speed intersection,’ said City Senior Technical Assistant Andrew Payton.

‘It is pointless continually replacing the cables. We are looking at other engineering solutions to combat this ongoing problem.

’Effecting repairs is very labour intensive, with the city and our contractors having to drop poles, replace cables and lay concrete each time, racking up a bill of R30 000 and more.

‘We need to find those people who are buying the cables if we are ever going to put a stop to this.’
