THE eShowe entry in this year’s Put Foot Rally aptly called, ‘Challenge Accepted’, filled up their vehicle, packed their goods and left eShowe on their way to Cape Town where they will be joined by other copmptitors in the fun rally.
To earn their place, Shane Grieve and Andrew Illing had to raise at least R10 000 which they did through a golf day at the eShowe Hills Eco-Estate and other fund-raising activities.
They will leave Cape Town on Wednesday, 18 June after registering the day before.
The trip to Cape Town will be at a slow pace as they realise they will be behind the wheel for 18 days when the rally starts in earnest.
The put Foot Rally declares itself as ‘not a charity event’, but is owned and run by Mountainshak Adventures, a social-adventure events management which is a for profit company.
The Put Foot Rally is the first social rally in Southern Africa.
It is also not a race, but an unassisted African adventure.
There is no backup, medical or mechanical and the 60 Crews take responsibility for their own planning, routes, vehicles and equipment to get them to various checkpoints located at the heart of each of the countries visited.
At each checkpoint, crews will meet up and enjoy a locally flavoured meal, a themed party and do some good before moving on with their adventure.
The first checkpoint is Toshari Lodge in the Etosha National Park in Namibia.
Next will be the Zambesi Waterfront in Zambia before finishing at the Livingstonia Hotel in Malawi.
Along the way, the teams will support the Put Foot Foundation by dropping off school shoes to disadvantaged pupils.
The whole event will end with the ‘Put foot After Party’ at the Palm Beach Hotel in Malawi on Saturday, 5 July, before the teams make their way back to South Africa.
Depending on wi-fi connections, the team have promised Zululand Eyethu a weekly up-date of their travels.
