February rainfalls recorded

Good rains, but dams stay empty.

ZULULAND farmers have had respite from the prolonged drought although the dams are not filling up.

The good soaking rains have, however, kept the soil moist with most of the rain soaking into the parched land.

Gingindlovu and the Makhathini Flats have recorded 79.1mm and 74.2mm respectively on Thursday.

The strange rainfall pattern saw St Lucia, Mkhuze and Empangeni only measuring 2.1mm, 2.3mm and 4.1mm.

Overall, February has so far shown increased rainfall with Pongola receiving 44.2mm and eShowe 26.2mm.

While the figures are still low, the rain has given farmers comfort in that it seems as though the long awaited rains could be on their way.

Last month, most stations in Zululand measured over 100mm with Mtunzini (64.6mm), Entumeni (95mm), Amatikulu (54mm), Darnall (61.5mm), Heatonville (74.2mm) and Gingindlovu (46.2mm) all registering less than 100mm.

The KZN South Coast is much worse off with Hibberdene and Dumisa having only registered 48mm and 39.4mm.
