A hoax BBM has been circulating on social media today reporting that Eskom had ‘notified the government in a special meeting that the main grid can crash at any time soon leaving the entire country in darkness for over two weeks.’
It goes on to say, ‘the American embassy has already put in place an emergency plan to evacuate all its workers and citizens at short notice’.
It concludes: THIS IS NOT A HOAX, act now before its too late.
While the blackout remains a possibility, there is no need to panic and start stockpiling food and firewood etc as suggested by the BBM.
Eskom tweeted ‘Load shedding is a control & planned way to protect the power system from a total blackout. Follow us for updates on the power system’ @Eskom_SA
