Please call if you’ve seen my goose
Richards Bay animal lovers on a not so wild goose chase.
AN anxious Richards Bay animal lover is worried that her goose may be cooked – literally.
The story began for Miriam Otto, wife of veterinarian Jens, some time ago when a pair of geese was hit by a car on the N2 near KwaMbonambi, leaving two tiny goslings the sole survivors.
‘They were brought to the surgery and we raised them despite really not knowing what to do.
‘Thanks to Google and Supreme Pets, we managed to nurture them to adult geese.
‘However, on Monday one flew away and our hearts were shattered.
‘Beate, my daughter, searched everywhere and even put a notice on Facebook.
‘This morning (Wednesday) Carol Page phoned and said one was in Roller Ring, Birdswood and had run after her.
‘She picked it up and took it home, but it flew away again,’ said Miriam.
‘The pair are tame and don’t know the dangers out there. We are scared someone will approach the missing goose and have it for lunch, or dogs may get hold of it since it has no fear of dogs.’
‘The remaining goose also flies away intermittentl,y but always comes back.
‘We had tried to release them at the Redinger Dam last Friday, but after two hours of following us they refused to leave the side of the car when we wanted to drive off and my heart broke, so we took them back home.
‘We don’t want to cage them or cut their wings as they should go out and conquer the world and migrate and breed and live happily ever after.
‘But they need to get used to the wild after being hand-raised.’
If you spot the friendly goose, call Miriam on 083 6513491.
