UPDATE: Progress for rural crèche government grant

Yvonne Slabbert was invited to attend a meeting with the uMkhanyakude District Non-profit Organisation (NPO) Forum.

ISIBANISEZWE Crèche, as well as other rural crèches near Hluhluwe, will soon receive their approved government grants. This, after their plight was publicised and shortcomings pointed out.

Since publicising the crèche’s experience in applying for an Early Childhood Development grant through the Department of Social Development, Yvonne Slabbert was invited to attend a meeting with the uMkhanyakude District Non-profit Organisation (NPO) Forum.

Also at the meeting were the KZN Departments of Education and Social Development.

‘They gave me a slot on the agenda to voice not only my opinion but also what I have accomplished for Isibanisezwe Crèche,’ said Slabbert who is thrilled with the progress.

Slabbert was afforded the opportunity to point out the many shortcomings in the application process, which have negatively affected not only Isibanisezwe Crèche but many others in the area.

Following the meeting, an urgent on-site meeting was called, at which evidence of the department’s shortcomings at the crèche were pointed out and an action plan put in place.

‘The relevant field officer has since reported back to me, [saying] that our crèche does not need to re-apply for the grant, nor do the other crèches [also] on the approved list but who have not yet received funding,’ said Slabbert.

She was informed that as soon as funds become available to the relevant department, either in the new budget or from alternative means, all crèches will receive their already approved grants according to the dates of their applications. Furthermore, Slabbert was promised updates every two weeks.

NPO forums from other local municipalities have since requested Slabbert’s help in fund-raising and other matters.
