Good day for Mtuba communities

Various handovers, launches and announcements took place in and around Mtubatuba.

MTUBATUBA was a hive of activity on Friday with various handovers, announcements and launches, including the switch on of an electrification project benefitting more than 600 households.

At a cost of R8-million to the province, Qakwini households had their lights switched on by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu. Mchunu also announced a major upgrade of the P484 road – from gravel to blacktop. This project will cost R350-million and will be implemented over the next five years.

The 23km-long route was identified as an important link for the kwaNkombose and Somkhele communities, which fall under the Mpukunyoni Traditional Council.

The first 700m of the P484 will be upgraded as part of the kwaBhoboza interchange which is currently under construction. Two new access roads will be constructed to better serve communities having to travel to clinics and schools.

In another event, KZN MEC for Finance, Belinda Scott, went door-to-door visiting communities on the outskirts of Mtubatuba in a bid to engage with communities at a ‘grass roots’ level.

Among other things, Scott handed over school uniforms to needy children and discussed money matters with residents.

Scott also selected Mtubatuba to launch her newly reconfigured outreach campaign. This involves engaging with local non-government organisations (NGOs) and non-profit organisations (NPOs) in fulfilling communities’ needs.

NPOs targeted for Scott’s visit were Sukumani, which cares for 70 HIV positive and orphaned children, and Isilungiso, an agricultural co-operative consisting of unemployed HIV positive residents who started their own gardens to sell produce within the local economy.
