Woman takes over as new iNkosi

iNkosi uNdlunkulu Nolwazi Khoza ready for challenge.

KwaBhejane Traditional Council outside Nseleni township has a new head – and it’s a woman.

Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Manager for the uThungulu District, Mbuso Sikhakhane, formally introduced uNdlunkulu Nolwazi Khoza to the community of KwaBhejane as their new head, following the passing of her husband Mzuvukile Richard in 2011.

‘I have a pleasure in introducing to you uMama Wesizwe. She will work with traditional and municipal Councillors residing within this area, as well as iziNduna.

‘As government we are here to ensure that the traditional leadership institution is respected. We do hope that there will be consultation and cooperation between iNkosi and her people on issues pertaining to service delivery,’ he said.

Longest serving member of the KwaBhejane Traditional Council, Eliam Biyela, said the new iNkosi took over at a time when the area was ravaged by drought and criminal activities, which have become a daily occurrence.

‘Armed with academic qualifications, we expect iNkosi to become an ambassador and an agent for change and development,’ said Biyela.

In her address, iNkosi Khoza said she was ready for any challenge ‘this hot seat’ poses.

I’m not promising miracles like politicians, but I’m willing to go the extra mile with you to ensure the delivery of basic services. I’m very concerned about the level of unemployment figures in this area, especially our youth.’

She also appealed to the community of KwaBhejane and its surroundings to continue treating foreign nationals like their brothers and sisters, as they have been doing.

‘I’m pleased that we have not seen any acts of violence against foreign nationals, as was the case in the other parts of the country. Continue with that spirit,’ she said.
