ALREADY subjected to ongoing, nauseating peat fires, the Richards Bay suburb of Veldenvlei found itself immersed in a blanket of smoke as a huge bush fire threatened homes on Saturday.
Residents in the Keiserskroon area watched anxiously as the blaze spread to their boundaries, fanned by a strong northeaster.
It is believed youths seen in the bush may have started the fire, which had no shortage of dry grass, leaves and branches to fuel it.
City Fire & Rescue personnel members were able to quell the blaze without destruction to property.
