UPDATE: More rain relief for Zululand
Areas south of Melmoth recorded on average 150mm of rain.
GOOD rains continued to fall in parched Zululand on Friday and Saturday, but although it might have created a perception that the back of the crippling drought might have been broken, it is still to early to call and residents still need to use water wisely.
Areas south of Melmoth recorded on average 150mm of rain, while eShowe measured over 180mm over the same period.
In the north, Makatini, Pongola and Mkuzi measured 14.5mm, 10mm and 7.2mm respectively on Saturday morning, with another 8.3mm, 9.4mm and 4.7mm falling on Saturday.
Further south, 12.6mm fell over the Umfolozi flood plains and St Lucia on Friday through to Saturday morning, while a further 12.2mm were recorded on Sunday.
For the three days since Friday, Melmoth has measured 66mm in the north and 89mm in the central areas.
Melmoth farmer Gavon Calverley said the rains were just what was needed and are a ‘godsend’.
He says the rains have been soaking and will build up ground water.
