‘Hooligan’ bikers under fire

Man injured in quad bike crash in Richards Bay.

WITH no helmet and a beer in his hand, an off-road Richards Bay quad bike rider blasting around behind the Meerensee bus rank in Richards Bay landed himself in hospital after a crash.

Richards Bay resident Ajay Fourie, who says he is ‘gatvol’ of the ‘hooligan’ riders who regularly blast around the greenbelt areas, bore witness to the incident.

‘We were hosting a children’s birthday party on Sunday (30 August),’ said Fourie.

‘I watched these guys come from a pub nearby and they proceeded to ride up and down, chasing the ducks,’ he said.

It wasn’t long before the inevitable happened.

‘He hit a dip at speed and the quad bike went airborne and came crashing down on top of him, rolling over his head.’

Fourie’s sister, who is a trained paramedic, was on the scene and assisted the injured rider.

Fourie says they struggled for some time to get hold of an ambulance service willing to come out to assist.

He was eventually seen to and taken to hospital.

‘Even while he was being treated by paramedics, the guy was extremely aggressive, shouting and swearing at everyone,’ said Fourie.

‘I don’t know why these guys insist on riding around these areas, being a nuisance and chasing animals.’

Fourie said such irresponsible riders gave other riders who wish to pursue the sport responsibly, a bad name.

‘They want to drink, and impress. But they actually end up hurting themselves or other people, and above all, being a nuisance.’
