UPDATE: ‘I was not drinking’ – injured rider sets the record straight

A quad bike rider who was injured, has spoken out against the allegations against him.

JACO Perkins, the biker who was injured in a quad bike crash recently has spoken out against the allegations made by an eye witness.

The Zululand Observer reported on the incident that occurred in the greenbelt area behind Meerensee bus rank.

Richards Bay resident Ajay Fourie said he had watched as the rider allegedly chased ducks with the quad, before crashing and injuring himself.

Fourie’s sister, a paramedic, assisted the injured rider until an ambulance arrived.

Setting the record straight

Perkins approached the ZO to tell his side of the story.

‘Anyone who has ever ridden a quad bike will know it is impossible to ride while you have a beer in your hand,’ he said.

‘It was early in the morning on the Saturday, not the Sunday. I was not drinking at the time.’

Perkins explained that he and a friend had decided to test out the quad, as the owner had made some modifications.

‘Unfortunately yes, I was riding without a helmet.’

‘But at no point was I chasing ducks or any animals. I hit a dip, and fell. That’s all, I just lost control.’

He also denied he had been at a nearby pub.

‘It was also the first time I had ever ridden on that field. I am a superbike rider, and the quad belongs to my friend.’

Perkins explained that he had bruised his breast bone, and barely spent 45 minutes in hospital.

‘That same night after the fall I was out with my friends,’ he said.

Editors note: The original report regarding this incident made mention of the term ‘hooligan’. The Zululand Observer wishes to make clear that this is in no way a reference to the motorcycle club called ‘The Hooligans MC’ based in Richards Bay. The word was used as a quote taken during original interviews with the complainant.
