THE City of uMhlathuze is to suspend all its land sales until such time as its Land Sales Policy is reviewed ‘very quickly’ and an audit is conducted on all available land.
The matter was debated and endorsed at Tuesday’s Exco meeting when the quarterly (April – June) land sales report was presented.
While the need to have land available for investment was agreed in the light of ‘a dire need for job creation, extra revenue and a general upliftment of the economy’, warning bells were also rung.
‘We cannot become land bankrupt because we just sold without exercising caution,’ said City Mayor Cllr Mdu Mhlongo.
‘Issuing long leases is preferable to selling the land, especially when it comes to foreign investors.’
The discussion also underlined the prohibitively high cost of council-owned property ‘as purchase prices have become exorbitant for ordinary community members to obtain land, let alone enter into the business sector’.
