Chamber concern over communication

Here are the highlights from the Empangeni Division of the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry meeting.

THE Empangeni Division of the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry has noted with growing concern that not enough has been done to publicise and inform residents of the current water crisis.

During its monthly meeting held at the Empanegeni Country Club on Thursday, division Chairman Dave Whittaker said the chamber will address a letter to the City of uMhlathuze to again highlight their concern.

‘Not enough is being done to sensitise and inform resident of the water crisis,’ he said.

‘People don’t necessarily read the same newspapers we do, and don’t always have access to information. There needs to be a more proactive approach.’

He stressed that the medium through which the information is shared needs to be free.

‘The reality is that some residents cannot afford to buy newspapers. We need to see a more interactive campaign to inform people.’

KZN is still in the grips of a severe drought, and local government is being hard pushed to find viable long-term solutions to alleviate the crisis.

‘They (the City) are our suppliers. They need to make the severity of the situation more clear,’ said Whittaker.
