SWIFT action by the police ORS Border Control Diving section saved the lives of three seamen who fell into the water while their vessel was docking at the Port of Richards Bay on Monday morning.
The trio fell overboard simultaneously as the gangplank of the Majuro-registered coal ship ‘Sparta’ was being lowered.
The prompt rescue action probably prevented a tragedy as the sailors, who desperately clung onto life buoys thrown from the ship, were decidedly shaken and shocked by the ordeal.
No sooner had the police crew completed this mission than they were again in action within minutes as they responded to an overturned skiboat SOS south of Richards Bay.
