‘Manky’ makes a miraculous recovery
Scarred and scared, he was brought to Empangeni SPCA
AFTER five months of intensive care at the Empangeni SPCA, a rural hunting dog has been given a second chance at life.
Stef van der Sandt and his fiancé Shaye Oram , a Durban couple on holiday in Zululand, found the three-month-old dog wandering near the Kosi Bay area, hairless and suffering from both demodectic and sarcoptic mange.
The couple, who subsequently named him ‘Manky’, brought him scarred and scared to the Empangeni SPCA.
Saved from a painful death, Manky was placed under the care of SPCA Office Manager Janine Quaite, and despite having five dogs of her own, she took it upon herself to nurse him back to health.
With the support of friends and colleagues the couple funded much of Manky’s treatment.
Unable to regulate his body temperature, Manky had to often wear a jersey, and an infrared heating lamp was set up in his unit to keep him warm.
‘It was hard work,’ said Janine. ‘I tried to get volunteers to assist, but he was in such a terrible state they simply wouldn’t go near him.’
With the help of local veterinarian, Dr Geoffrey Fourie, the hard work paid off.
Manky has been transformed from his pitiful state into a healthy, happy canine.
Now all that’s left to do is find the resilient pup a loving home.
As Manky is used to being surrounded by people and other animals, his potential owners will have to spend time with him and not leave him alone for long periods of time.
Empangeni SPCA has also planned follow-up treatments to monitor to his skin condition.
‘I wish I could keep him, but I can’t give him the attention he needs,’ said Janine. ‘It will be tough to see him go, but he needs the love and company we can’t give him as a kennel dog, which is why we have decided to rehome him.’
