Farewell to a St Lucia icon

An avid bowler and fisherman, Johnny claimed many prizes for both but loved, more than anything, being out at sea where he was at his happiest when fishing.

ST LUCIA locals gathered at the Ski Boat Club last weekend to pay respects and say their final farewell to Johnny Araujo, a much loved member of the community.

After a three-year battle with cancer, Johnny passed away at his home last Tuesday morning.

The well respected builder and plumber has left a lasting legacy in the number of homes he has built, as well as through the many strong friendships he formed during the 14 years he lived in St Lucia.

He leaves behind his partner, Sharron, and children.

An avid bowler and fisherman, Johnny claimed many prizes for both but loved, more than anything, being out at sea where he was at his happiest when fishing.

Johnny will be sorely missed by many, not least Donovan Wadely, who described Johnny as his fishing buddy and wing man, after having fished together for many years aboard Donovan’s boat, The Don.

Born in Madeira, Johnny also lived in Angola before arriving in South Africa, where he spent most of his life.

He lived in Pretoria for many years before eventually settling in St Lucia.

Johnny will be sorely missed but his memory will live on forever.
