Logos Hope sails in with winds of change
Described as a voyage of hope, the volunteer crew believes in promoting peace by embracing the diversity of nations and cultures, through cultural exchange programmes and community service initiatives.
THE 400 crew members of the stately vessel, the Logos Hope, welcomed their first guests on board for the official opening of the floating book fair on Thursday at the Tuzi Gazi Small Craft Harbour.
Donned in colourful traditional wear representing over 55 nations of the world, the friendly crew ushered in visitors for a unique taste of life at sea.
Managing Director, Seelan Govender addressed invitees, including the uMhlathuze City Deputy Mayor, Cllr Zethu Gumbi, community leaders, church leaders and government officials on the ship’s vision to provide access to high quality books at ports of call and to express practical love, care and humanitarian relief to people in need.
He said the diversity of cultures are united in their belief in Jesus Christ.

Captain Chris Hughes, a veteran of 40 years at sea, presented the Deputy Mayor with a gift of books, whereafter Mexican dancers took to the stage with a feisty traditional item.
Maiden visit
The Logos Hope is on her first visit to Richards Bay and presents the public with over 5 000 book titles, including children’s books, academic texts, science, hobbies and educational material.
The books are offered at affordable prices due to donations from publishers.
The Visitor’s Experience Desk is open for the public to explore and in the welcome area, a short movie and interactive displays introduce the ship.
Snacks, ice cream and cool drinks are available for purchase.
An International Culture Festival will be hosted on board on Saturday 14 May from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm.
The entertainment line-up will include different cultural performances, music, songs and dance.
Tickets are available on board at R50 per person.
The Logos Hope will be open to the public until 17 May.
Opening hours are from Sunday to Tuesday and Saturday from 2pm to 9:30pm and Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 9:30pm.
There is an entrance fee of R5 per person and children under 12 enter free, but must be accompanied by an adult.
