ANC wants answers on Mashaba death crash

ANC NEC Member Nomvula Mokonyane has slammed political killings

‘THE ANC will not rest until we get the full closure of what really happened on that fateful day (9 July 2015), when our giant the late Regional Chairperson Thulani Mashaba lost his life in a car accident, near Ballito.

‘However we are still hopeful that our law enforcement agencies will assist us going forward in this regard.

‘We know that even before Mashaba’s death, there had been numerous attempts on his life. Bitter as we are, this however must not divide us as the movement.’

That was the feeling of the ANC NEC Member and Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane, speaking during the Thulani Mashaba Memorial Lecture held last week at Empangeni Civic Centre.

The Lecture was organised by the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in its programme of Mayihlome, as part of honouring the late ANC leader one year after his death.

Mokonyane used the lecture as a revival for ANC members to become organisers and leaders from the front as Mashaba was.

‘Our revolution is lonely without Mashaba. He understood that the power belongs to the people on the ground.
‘He understood that what brought us together was the love of the ANC not to lead the ANC.

‘This was one leader who was jealous about the ANC, bringing his arrogance in the best interest of the party.

‘He valued the unity of the party and if he was still around, he would have come to Tshwane to defend the ANC, because he was a member of the ANC in South Africa, not only here in Musa Dladla.’

Political killings
Mokonyane also cautioned against political killings that have ravaged the province, saying it will be a shame to learn of an ANC member killing one of his own, so as to get to the top.

She admitted that the ANC has never been in as hotly contested an election as the forthcoming 3 August Municipal Elections.

‘We have never been this disorganised to the extent of delaying our elections, because our house was not in order. We had to sort out ourselves first.

‘We must also remember that we serve at the pleasure of the ANC, and only the ANC could decide on you. So you don’t need to commit murder in order for you to get positions in the ANC.

‘My message to those who have not been nominated as candidates, is to remain humble and the ANC will remember you. Take this from me, I know what I’m talking about.

‘After serving as Premier of Gauteng, from 2009 to 2014, I thought the ANC was going to retain me because I had delivered, but the party decided otherwise.

‘It was painful, because I never saw it coming. I cried because the issue that I would not be the Premier was discussed in my presence.

‘When I thought my political career was all over, the ANC appointed me as the Minister in a newly created Department of Water and Sanitation. That’s ANC for you. Remain humble, the ANC will remember you,’ said Mokonyane’ affectionately known as ‘Mama Action’.

The lecture was also attended by Mashaba’s family including his wife Nobuhle and other provincial and regional leaders of the ANC.
