WATCH: Unizulu students on a rampage at Bay campus
Angry mob of students burn down security house at the University of Zululand’s Richards Bay campus
ANGRY Unizulu students have caused mayhem in Richards Bay, torching the security house at the University’s CBD campus and breaking down an entry gate.
Witnesses from nearby businesses in the Richards Bay CBD told the Zululand Observer a short while ago that the enraged mob of students were throwing stones in the direction of the campus and had vandalised university property.
They also started fires in the road and prevented traffic from passing.
According to fearful employees of companies adjacent to the tertiary institution, the violent protest action began over an hour ago.
The incident escalated from a noisy protest to a violent one after campus security lobbed smoke bombs at the mob.
‘We are taking precautionary measures and have closed our gates and moved our vehicles inside. There are no police on the scene and the situation is out of hands,’ a witness on scene told the Zululand Observer.
It was a full 30 minutes before police arrived – a single Public Order Policing vehicle with just three members.
But they hit the ground running, firing at the large group who dispersed in seconds, charging through the adjacent Civic Centre property and into the CBD, persued by the police.
According to sources, students are reportedly unhappy about ongoing reports about the degree-for-sale scam and discrepancies with the handing out of laptops to students.
ZO journalists were on the scene, which calmed after the police and Fire Department arrived.
