‘As promised, construction is ongoing and the city aims to ensure the project is completed within the set time,’ said city communications manager Mdu Ncalane.
Work to beautify the township began two years ago after residents complained about the road being too narrow, and causing delays and major traffic congestion in the mornings and afternoon peak hours.
Upgrades detailed in the initial plan included the expansion of the narrow main road, which has previously caused major accidents, and the upgrade of the traffic circle.
It also includes the beautification of the township’s entrance, and building a park for social activities.
According to the city’s last report, the rehabilitation of Mdlebe Ntshona Road towards the Dube tribal area is 78% complete, while 27% of work has been done towards restoring stormwater infrastructure on the west side of the road towards Port Durnford.
Stormwater and layer works have also commenced on the south side of Mthombothi Road. The widening of the culvert on P535 is 38% complete, and the upgrade of the township’s monument site is 4% complete.
However, amid the ongoing work, the city has urged motorists to exercise caution, and expect delays and temporary road closures.
