‘The Bill of Rights states that every person has a right to a clean environment that is not harmful to their health. Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment. The municipality makes provision for waste collection services to improve the quality of life of the entire community, and ensure a clean and more acceptable place to live and work in,’ Mngenge said.

He said the objective of the clean-up campaign was to reduce illegal dumping, restore pride, promote environmental awareness, and eradicate environmental diseases such as cholera and typhoid that thrive in a polluted environment.

‘Every person seen littering must be reported to the municipality,’ he said.

The officials also visited businesses in Mzingazi and KwaMbonambi which were affected by the July unrest, to assess the extent of damage caused by looters.
